Jaipur, Feb. 20 : By adapting an unusual mode of protest, a farmer seeking compensation for his damaged crops from government created a ruckus earlier this week, as he chained his leg to the front gate of the Rajasthan Legislative Assembly.

Rajpal Puniya, the farmer was perturbed over his crops getting damaged due to the unexpected frost in the recent onslaught of winter. He wanted the State government to reimburse him for his losses suffered.

Escaping everyone’s attention, Rajpal Puniya reached the State Assembly in the wee hours on Monday and chained himself to the gate.

"The Government should compensate us for the losses we have incurred due to the cold wave that hit our crops very badly. Moreover, due to the failure of crops, the farmers of the region have been under debts since they have no money to pay, which are resulting in more suicidal cases. Although a number of significant steps have already been taken to improve the condition of the farmers, they have not been implemented till date," Rajpal Puniya.

However, Rajpal Puniya was unchained soon after the police arrived at the spot and took him into its custody.

The extreme vagaries of weather during winter and the frost have caused extensive damage to standing crops in many parts of north India including Rajasthan.

Vegetables, fruits and flowers are among the worst-hit. An estimated 30 to 90 percent of tomatoes, potatoes, capsicums and peas at different places have been affected due to the extreme chilling breeze and frost formation.

The frost was so intense that most of the advanced techniques used to protect them from the cold wave proved ineffective. It is believed that even the power sprays and greenhouses could not save the crops. (ANI)
