Volvo to drive all by itself
Soon we would see a Volvo which would drive on its own and at the same time it would be coming up with the first ever "accident-proof car". The motions would be controlled by the car as it drives through the traffic using radar to control the distance.
At the Detroit motor show next month, the Swedish manufacturer is to make a proud presentation of Volvo S60, with automatic brakes. By 2010, it will hit he roads.
The car is capable of coming to a stop and can turn away from collision with a pedestrian or another automobile even while traveling at speed by sensing on its own. A refined cruise control system, specially designed, enables it to keep a safe distance from another car in front automatically.
The function of the radar, fitted in the car's grille is many fold. It not only detects what's in front of the vehicle but also the speed of it. A light automatically flashes on the windscreen display along with an audible warning to the driver, thereby alerting him, when the car feels that an obvious collision is to take place. Following this, the brakes then play their part with an automatic application, bringing the car to a halt.
Thomas Broberg, the company's safety specialist said, "This technology helps us take an important step towards our long-term vision of designing cars that should not crash."
He added, "Our aim for 2020 is that no one should be killed or injured in a Volvo car."
