Uzo Aduba to Run Boston Marathon to raise Money for Cancer Research
Uzo Aduba, the actress who plays Crazy Eyes on 'Orange is the New Black', has been preparing to run the Boston Marathon in order to raise money for cancer research.
The race, to be held on April 20, will be Aduba's second marathon. She ran the marathon for the first time two years ago, in New York. That time also, it was to support cancer research,
Aduba said, "When I ran New York, there were four people in my life - one had passed, and three were battling cancer. Now, today, there's only one still fighting".
A personal loss in the fall inspired Aduba to run 26.2 miles again, this time in her hometown. The actress, who is part of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's marathon challenge, released a video on Tuesday to spread the word about sponsoring her run.
Aduba is a Massachusetts native who grew up watching the Boston Marathon. The actress said that they call the race 'Marathon Monday', and that it is like a tradition for them. She added that they all love it and are proud to have the marathon in their city, this time.
During the days of Aduba's high school and college at Boston University, she was a sprinter. When Aduba moved to New York to pursue her acting career, she switched to long-distance running.
Since the starting of her marathon training, Aduba has been running about 5 miles per day, with a 10- to 18-mile run on weekends. Whenever the feeling of quitting comes to her mind, Aduba starts thinking about her loved ones fighting cancer.
She said that the ones who had cancer ran a much harder race as compared to her. So far, Aduba has raised $4,000 towards cancer research with her Boston bid.
