Use of E-Cigarettes among Teens on the rise

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the number of middle and high school teens that make use of e-cigs tripled in one year. Some alarming and sharply increasing numbers in the number of teens using electronic cigarettes have also been revealed by a new study.

Experts said that electronic cigarettes are considered different than the traditional kind and more and more teens have started this habit. A new study has been released by the CDC about the trend, about teens and their e-cig use, and how dangerous the increasing problem might be.

"This is something new, this is a novelty. That plays directly into the development of an adolescent", said Amy Lukowski, Clinical Director at National Jewish Health.

According to researchers, the reality that teen use has increased is not the only concern, but the amount of nicotine inside e-cigs as well. As per Dr .David Tinkleman, the Medical Director at National Jewish Health, no control over dosing is there and there is a possibility that it could be harmful for teen brain development.

Dr. Tinkleman said that part of the brain, called the limbic system, is very vulnerable to the effects of nicotine. It also relates to behavior control and emotional development. According to the researchers, various e-cigs have nicotine that can lead to addiction over time.

Dr. Lukowski said that her addiction counselors received 22,000 calls a month from people who are already addicted. As per the CDC, e-cigs are the most usually used tobacco product among teens and it has surpassed present use of every other tobacco product, involving regular cigarettes.
