US performs first Uterus Transplant on a Texas Woman
When ethics panel of Cleveland clinic directed the clinic to perform an experiment to transplant 10 uterus, women were chosen from ages 21 to 39. The name of a 26 years old woman was placed on the waiting list a day before to her nine-hour-long operation for uterus transplant. After the day of her operation, February 24, the woman became first to receive a uterus in the US.
Lindsey, the Texas woman who underwent surgery, was born without uterus; she always hoped to experience child bearing state. Now with her surgery, she can fulfill her dream to have her own children. Lindsey and her husband Blake have three adopted children. “I have prayed that God would allow me the opportunity to experience pregnancy, and here we are at the beginning of that journey”, said Lindsey on Monday at a news conference where doctors revealed details of her operation.
According to Dr. David K. Klassen, chief medical officer of the organ sharing network, if the experimental transplants will get success, the procedure would be widely popular. Currently, across the world there are between 3% and 5% of women of childbearing age who are infertile due to reasons such as they born without uterus, damaged uterus or uterus being removed. There are around 50,000 potential transplant candidates in the US.
There is another woman in the waiting list, suitable donor for whom is being searched. The clinic has screened 250 women for finding possible candidates. There are two other medical centers in the US, Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, all have announced similar pilot programs, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing.
