Islamabad, Sep 25: The United States and the European Union are concerned over the recent arrests and detention of leaders of the opposition parties ahead of the presidential election on October 6.

A US embassy statement stated that reports of the detention of the leadership of several major Pakistani political parties are "extremely disturbing and confusing" for the "friends of Pakistan".

"We wish to express our serious concern about these developments and all the detainees should be released as soon as possible," the statement said.

The US made it clear that it wanted to see Pakistan succeed as a moderate, modern, democratic country led by choices of the Pakistani people. "We do not endorse particular candidates or parties," it added.

The statement further said the US would like to see a fair, free and transparent election process that respects the Constitution, gives Pakistani citizens choices and respects their decisions without any impediment.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that the arrest of opposition activists in Pakistan was troubling.

A statement by the EU said while understanding the importance of maintaining law and order during the electoral process, "we urge the Pakistan Government to ensure that its response is proportionate and follows due legal process."

The statement underlined the importance of a level playing field for free and fair elections in Pakistan, that allows full participation of all political parties, the Daily Times reported. (With Inputs from ANI)
