US benchmark stock indices close higher
New York - Major Wall Street stock indices approached one- year highs Tuesday amid rising optimism about the global economy.
Financial shares led the way as the dollar dropped to a one-year low against the euro. The weaker US currency contributed to rising oil prices.
The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 51.01 points, or 0.52 per cent, to 9,829.87. The broader Standard and Poor's 500 Index gained 7 points, or 0.66 per cent, to 1,071.66. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index added 8.26 points, or 0.39 per cent, to 2,146.3.
The US currency fell against the euro to 67.608 euro cents from 68.13 euro cents on Monday. The dollar dropped gained against the Japanese currency to 92.01 yen from 91.29 yen. dpa
