UK Retailer Morrisons Picks Wipro For IT Support

Wipro Pockets UK Retailer Morrisons’ IT DealUK’s fourth major food retailer Morrisons has joined hands with Bangalore-based IT company Wipro Technologies for development of its subsisting IT systems and applications in order to support future growth plans.

Wipro Retail, a specialist division of Wipro Technologies, will deliver an operating model, which supports the strategic and commercial objectives of Morrisons, with 375 stores and annual turnover of £13 billion.

Both the companies have not disclosed the details regarding the size of the deal.

In a declaration, Mr. Richard Pennycook, CFO of Morrisons said, “Morrisons is making a major investment to give us the systems and processes to drive our business forward. Wipro Retail brings technology and retail business expertise to help us in the process.”

Wipro will help the UK giant in fulfilling the core idea of delivering effectual planning, management as well as delivery of big systems and process change, which will be based on the Oracle ERP platform.

Gary Barr, CIO, Morrisons said, “This is more than a systems replacement programme. It is a business change programme, enabled by the replacement of the existing IT systems, in order to support the continued and future growth of the business.”

By using the new software platform to perform labour intensive, non value-add tasks, Morrisons plans to focus their key staff on higher value and customer facing jobs, which in line may help maintain their competitive advantage and support continued growth.

The Retail and Transportation practice grew 11.4% sequentially in stable currency conditions and accounted for 18% of Wipro Technologies’ earnings during the December quarter.
