UK Ministers and Health Bosses admit Mental Health Care is Poor and Underfunded

A new report has suggested that mental health care quality in the United Kingdom is going through a bad phase. Health care is lacking, underfunded and ruining many people’s lives, the report published by a taskforce set up by NHS England concluded.

Only a few people in the country are getting help on time. There are many sufferers who have received lesser care than required and funding constraints have put more pressure on current staff. Only 15% people are actually getting the help they need.

The UK ministers and country’s health experts have admitted that the new report is true and mental health problems are indeed a growing concern. They also pledged to give £1bn extra in next five years, so that the problem could be solved as soon as possible. Prime Minister David Cameron has also said that government is committed to put mental healthcare at par with physical healthcare.

Cameron also said that new plans to tackle the problem may put mental and physical healthcare at equal levels. According to the Prime Minister, he wanted to see every person in need getting help on time. Cameron also admitted that since a long time, the country has not focused on mental health care.

Mental health care, also known as the Cinderella service of the NHS, has not grabbed health ministry’s attention for the last few years. It has been neglected and under-funded, according to the new report.

After the report’s release, ministers and NHS have said that they have planned to take the problem seriously and will work to tackle it. But similar things were said a few years ago when the coalition launched its mental health strategy. As NHS doesn’t have enough funds, there are possibilities that despite the promises being made, history could still repeat itself.
