American space agency NASA said that two astronauts aboard the international Space Station (ISS) have successfully completed their spacewalk on Monday in order to perform some repairs in the stations railcar.

As per the agency experts, everything during the spacewalk went as per plan, but still they said a huge risk is always involved in such tasks. The space station’s mobile transporter railcar got stuck just 4 inches (10 centimeters) from where it could be safely latched down Wednesday night (Dec. 16).

The agency experts said the railcar has to be repaired before the Progress resupply spacecraft arrives at the space station. The craft is bringing along with it 2.8 tons of food and supplies. The station’s railcar acts as the home base of the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm.

As soon as the situation was known to astronauts aboard ISS the agency experts and astronauts decided to take a spacewalk to carry out the repairs. NASA spokesman Rob Navias during NASA's live broadcast of the operation said that spacewalk was put together in just a few days after the railcar got stuck.

This surprise spacewalk was commanded by NASA’s Scott Kelly and NASA astronaut Tim Kopra who arrived at the space station less than a week also joined him for the spacewalk. It was second spacewalk of Kopra’s career and third for Scott Kelly.

British astronaut Tim Peake, who also recently arrived, assisted the astronauts in getting out and back into the station. The astronauts were finally able to free the railcar at 7:45 a.m. EST.
