Triumphant Heart Transplant Leaves 15-Year-Old Overwhelmed

Trevor Sullivan, a 15 years old child living in Michigan, underwent a heart transplant within 24 hours of knowing that he has received a donor. The life-saving surgery went on for hours, but the outcome left everyone overwhelmed, particularly Trevor, who did not know if he would ever open his eyes again when he went into the surgery room. The transplant was carried out on November 13, 2015 and when he first woke up after surgery, his father captured those moments on a video.

"I've waited so long. I'm so happy. I can breathe again and can talk," said Trevor in the video, with tears in his eyes. Trevor was discharged from the hospital a day before Thanksgiving, approximately a week and half following his transplant. Sullivan stated that their aim behind doing this video recording was to create awareness regarding the organ donations.

The first suspicion of Trevor facing some problem arose when he repetitively fell ill during the entire month of September 2014. He recovered, but only to fall sick again in January 2015. A team of cardiologists at a local hospital revealed about the failing condition of Trevor’s heart, after a month. Subsequently, on February 12, 2015 he was airlifted to be sent to C.S. Mott Children's Hospital at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

There it was detected that Trevor is suffering from cardiomyopathy, which refers to a disease that results in heart getting enlarged, making it tough for the heart to pump blood to the entire body. The Sullivan family got Trevor enlisted for the heart transplantation. Following a 10-month waiting period, the family was notified through a call that their son has received a heart donor. Following the notification, the surgery happened the next afternoon. Sullivan family is not much aware of the heart donor because of the national privacy laws. All they know is that the donor was a younger person, whose heart was in good condition, with strong muscle tissues.
