Tripura Police Seizes Contraband Cough Syrup From New Delhi Airplane

Tripura Police seized a huge quantity of smuggled cough syrup from an airplane from New Delhi.

According to the reports, the cough syrup was said to be smuggled onward to Bangladesh.

Police officer Sidhartha Sankar Kar, who acting on a tip off led the operation to seize the contraband said, "We have seized 20 big trunks containing 4,000 bottles of Phensidyl worth Rs 400,000 from a private passenger airliner. The passenger plane arrived in Agartala from New Delhi via Guwahati."

He added that the shipment was booked in Indian capital under forged names.

He also said that they have handed over the smuggled goods to customs functionaries for compulsory action.

No one has been detained thus far. A senior customs executive said inquiries were going on.

The active components of Phensidyl comprise codeine phosphate and ephedrine. It is often utilized as a recreational narcotic and sedative drug.

Some people in India and Bangladesh are hooked on Phensidyl, popularly named in Bangladesh as Phensi, inchi, dyle, fanta, fantoos.

The medicine is prohibited in Bangladesh, but not in India which is the only nation to fabricate Phensidyl. (With Input from Agencies)
