Top Gorkha leader fatally stabbed in Darjeeling
The president of the Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League and a prominent proponent of Gorkhaland, Mr. Tamang was lethally stabbed with "khukris". Khukri is a traditional curved knives used in this part of the country. Having a senior political personality in the Darjeeling hills, Mr. Tamang was well known for his opposition to the GJM. He was among the people who met Mr. M .K. Narayanan the West Bengal Governor earlier this week, regarding the purpose of intervention for "restoration of democracy" in the region.
At the time of attack, during the early morning of Friday Mr. Tamang was supervising the preparations of a rally which was to be addressed by him. He was suddenly attacked by a group of people near the Club side area. His supporters came into conflict with GJM men. Then extravagantly bleeding Mr. Tamang was taken to a near by local hospital but due to severe injuries it was truly hard for the doctors to save him. However, the GJM has denied any of this involvement in this killing.
