Tokyo stocks up on Wall Street rise
Tokyo - Tokyo stocks closed higher Friday after the US market's overnight rise, but gains were limited as the yen advanced against the US dollar.
The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average edged up 60.17 points, or 0.57 per cent, to end at 10,534.14 ahead of Sunday's elections in which Japan's voters are likely to oust the ruling Liberal Democratic Party after more than five decades in power.
The broader-based Topix index was also up 5.08 points, or 0.53 per cent, at 969.31.
For the week, the Nikkei rose 2.89 per cent, and the Topix also went up 2.27 per cent.
On currency markets at noon (0300 GMT), the dollar traded at 93.63-68 yen, down from Thursday's 5 pm quote of 93.67-70 yen. A stronger yen reduces the value of Japanese companies' overseas earnings.
The euro traded at 1.4355-60 dollars, up from late Thursday's quote of 1.4240-43 dollars, and at 134.45-50 yen, up from 133.41-45 yen. (dpa)
