Three more charged in major health care fraud
Federal authorities said on Thursday that two doctors and a nurse have been charged in connection with the nation's largest home health care fraud bust. They are among seven North Texans who have been charged in the case.
According to the US attorney's office, the Medicare Fraud Strike Force made efforts in the direction and it led to federal charges against 243 people, together with 46 doctors, nurses and other licensed medical professionals.
As per officials, a variety of schemes helped the suspects make $712 million in billings for nonexistent treatments.
According to US Attorney General Loretta Lynch, "This action represents the largest criminal health care fraud takedown in the history of the Department of Justice".
On Tuesday, five North Texans were arrested in connection with an alleged $40 million fraud. Myrna S. Parcon, a. k. a. 'Merna Parcon', 62, of Dallas; Dr. Noble U. Ezukanma, 56, a Fort Worth doctor; Lita S. Dejesus, 70, of Allen; Oliva A. Padilla, 57, of Garland; and Ben P. Gaines, 55, of Plano were among those arrested.
According to authorities, all appeared in court for the first time and have been released on bond. It is expected that a sixth person, Dr. Ransome N. Etindi, of Waxahachie will surrender to authorities on Friday in Dallas.
Home health care plays special role in caring for seniors and the disabled, discharged from hospitals. Several patients recover at home and require to be looked after by nurses, physicians or therapists. Whenever a nurse, physician or therapist visits the patient, it is billed as an episode of care.
