World-renowned electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla Motors has announced the availability of a new over-the-air (OTA) software upgrade option, called Energy Boost, for the discontinued Model Y RWD e-SUV, offering owners a significant range enhancement. Available only in the United States, the upgrade unlocks up to 50 miles of additional electric range for the Model Y RWD, which was originally rated by EPA at 260 miles. With the help of the OTA upgrade, the Model Y RWD can now achieve up to 310 miles of electric range, which is surely of great use for those looking to maximize their vehicles’ efficiency.

The Model Y RWD version was removed from Tesla’s lineup in the month of May this year, when the Model Y Long Range RWD was introduced with a range of up to 320 miles. At that time, Tesla Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elon Musk had announced that the withdrawn Model Y e-SUV would get a special option to boost range, and now it has finally available.

Initially, CEO Musk has dropped a hint the discontinued EV could get its range boosted by 40 to 60 miles. Now, it has clear that the EV giant had produced the RWD version of the EV with a higher battery capacity but it kept the range down to streamline its supply chain.

Depending on the type of the battery pack, the Energy Boost option sets the buyer back by $1,000 or $1,600 for adding range of up to 30 miles or 50 miles, respectively. The EV’s latest price was $42,990, before deduction of $7,500 federal tax credit.

The strategic move of the OTA upgrade not only simplifies the EV giant’s supply chain but also offers a fascinating value proposition for the Model Y RWD’s current owners.
