Teal Pumpkin Project aims to bring awareness of food allergies
Parents having children allergic to nuts or other ingredients in candy they get in Halloween need not to worry as there is a project that aims to raise awareness about allergies during the holiday. In 2014, Food Allergy Research & Education started the Teal Pumpkin Project and now it has become a national movement.
The project not only promotes safety and inclusion of individuals having food allergies, but it also provides food alternatives for children having allergies. As per the Food Allergy Research & Education, around 15 million Americans will be having some type of food allergy.
One in every 13 children under the age group of 18 years can suffer from any type of food allergy. In fact, a study carried out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2013 has found a 50% rise among children having food allergy. For now, it is not known as to why a rise is being witnessed in number of children suffering from food allergies.
The Teal Pumpkin Project suggests many non-food items that people can give to children having food allergies. Suggested items by the project include glow sticks, bracelets, pencils, stickers, notepads, playing cards, bookmarks and bouncy balls.
One can also offer candy and non-allergic food in different bowls to offer to all trick or treaters. Food Allergy Research & Education said that over 15% of school age children having food allergies can suffer from a reaction in school.
