Tamil Nadu puts ban on poultry feed from Karnataka
Tamil Nadu government has put a ban on poultry feed from Karnataka in a bid to prevent the spread of bird flu that recently hit the adjacent state.
Karnataka government recently admitted that the state suffered an outbreak of bird flu on turkeys, prompting the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu to put the ban.
Krishnagiri district collector Pooja Kulkarni said the department of animal husbandry had declared the ban on Saturday and they implemented it immediately.
Speaking on the topic, Kulkarni added, "We had instructed all our officials in the check posts on Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border near Hosur to send back the poultry feed-laden trucks from Karnataka."
On Sunday, the authorities sent back 52 trucks carrying poultry feed- like corn, ground-nut and soya cakes from Karnataka. All other vehicles that were entering from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu were sprayed with disinfection medicines.
The collector added that the ban would be maintained until the government of Karnataka declared that the bird flu-hit state becomes free from the outbreak.
But, poultry farmers in Tamil Nadu have expressed their discontentment over the ban saying crores of chickens in state depend on poultry feed from Karnataka, and they would die if they don't get the feed.
