Suspected US missile strike leaves nine dead in Pakistan
Islamabad - Two missiles believed to have been fired from a US drone Sunday on a militant hideout in Pakistan's restive tribal region near the Afghan border killed at least nine people, a media report said.
Fourteen people were also injured in the attack that took place in Sararogha area of tribal district South Waziristan, a known sanctuary of Taliban and al-Qaeda militants launching cross border attacks on US-led international forces in Afghanistan.
The missile attack demolished a mud compound, reported Urdu- language Aaj news channel.
The US has in recent months have carried out more than 30 drone attacks in Pakistan's tribal areas, eliminating dozens of Taliban and al-Qaeda militants, including some key leaders.
But the pro-western government in Islamabad has repeatedly protested the strikes, saying these violated its sovereignty and fuelled public anger.
Sunday's attack took place in the area of Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud, who is suspected for ordering dozens of suicide attacks in Pakistan. dpa
