Supporters of ousted President seize three government buildings in Kyrgyzstan
Officials have said that supporters of ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiyev seized three government buildings on Thursday in southern Kyrgyzstan.
The Russian news agency RIA Novosti has reported that they demanded the return of provincial administrators replaced by the new government in Bishkek.
In Jalal-Abad, the provincial governor fled after 700 Bakiyev supporters forced their way into the administrative headquarters. Protesters also took control of a building in Osh, while in the Batken region about 50 people entered a building after the end of the working day.
It was also reported that Bakiyev's support is strongest in the south, where he stayed for several days after he was forced out of Bishkek. He has been granted sanctuary in Belarus.
The report further noted that the Kyrgyz prosecutor general, charging Bakiyev is responsible for the deaths of scores of people during demonstrations against his government in April, has asked Belarus to extradite him. (With Inputs from Agencies)
