Sunni, some Shiites in Lebanon to celebrate Ramadan feast Tuesday
Beirut - Lebanon's Sunni Muslim Community will celebrate Tuesday the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, along with some Shiites who adhere to the tradition of Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Fadlallah.
Lebanese Shiites who support Iran, such as the followers of Hezbollah, have not announced yet if they will celebrate on Tuesday along with the rest of the Shiite community.
Ramadan, which commemorates the prophet Muhammad's receiving the Islamic holy book the Koran, is considered a time of contemplation, prayer and a turning away from mundane pursuits.
The fast from sunrise to sunset requires the observant to refrain from food, drink, and tobacco.
The holy month concludes Monday with a celebration called Eid al-Fitr, a day of rejoicing that companies the end of the daily fasting. (dpa)
