Sugary Drinks responsible for 184,000 deaths worldwide annually

A new research paper has unveiled concerning news that sugary drinks are responsible for many deaths across the world. As per medical experts’ estimations, as many as 184,000 adults across the world died due to sugary drinks.

As per the researchers from Tufts University in Boston, in 2010, an estimated 133,000 deaths happened from diabetes, 45,000 from cardiovascular disease and 6,450 from cancer. Study’s lead researcher Dr Dariush Mozaffarian said that there are many countries in the world where deaths take place due to a single dietary factor, sugar-sweetened beverages.

There is need to eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages from the diet. The research published in the American Heart Association's Circulation journal is considered to be the first detailed global report that has assessed deaths owing to sugar-sweetened beverages.

Sugar-sweetened beverages include fizzy drinks, fruit drinks, energy drinks, iced teas and homemade sugar drinks. In the study, the researchers assessed 62 dietary surveys in which there were 611,971 people and were carried out between 1980 and 2010 in 51 nations.

The researchers also assessed data on national availability of sugar in 187 countries and other information. “There are no health benefits from sugar-sweetened beverages, and the potential impact of reducing consumption is saving tens of thousands of deaths each year”, said Dr. Mozaffarian.

Dr. Neville Howard from the Australian Diabetes Council suggested reducing sugar intake. Australian Beverages Council CEO Geoff Parker stated that the study has not suggested that soft drinks are the main reason of diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer.
