Study: Mothers Can Flavor Their Milk

Mother's milk is the only food consumed by new born babies. The new research has shown that mother milk retains the flavor of the food eaten by them before feeding the child.

The study done by the University of Copenhagen included 18 lactating mothers. This research was lead by Dr Helene Hausner, of Copenhagen University. The researchers gave these nursing mums capsules containing a variety of flavors, including banana, liquorice, caraway seed and menthol. Sample of milk before and after eating these capsules was tested.

The researchers concluded that the mother’s milk get the flavor of the food within half hour. But it loses the acquired flavor within eight hours. The researcher added that non-citrus fruit flavors affect flavor of breast milk very minutely as compared to other chemicals, such as those in carrots that produce larger change. Children of women who drank carrot juice during pregnancy or while they were breast feeding their children went on to like carrot flavored cereal.

The researchers claimed that mother can decide what should be the flavor of their milk. Children of such mothers who try new things are more eager to taste new food when they start eating. The researcher added that milk doesn’t retain a specific flavor of single dish. It can only retain some basic tastes. A researcher said, "Breastfeeding may prepare the infant for flavor changes and new experiences when they start to eat solid foods.”

Hence the researchers said the mothers shouldn’t eat too much spicy food during breast feeding. They should take a wholesome diet to provide essential nutrients to their children. By trying different food stuffs mothers make their child receptive to new flavors in later life.
