Strong connection between psychosis and homophobia
A study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine has found that there is a link between psychosis and homophobia. After investigating homophobia as possible mental illness, correlations to psychological dysfunctions were found.
Study researchers from Italy’s University of L’Aquila said, “After discussing for centuries if homosexuality is to be considered a disease, for the first time we demonstrated that the real disease to be cured is homophobia, associated with potentially severe psychopathologies”.
An experiment was carried out in which more than 520 students aged between 18 and 30 have taken part. They were given a series of evaluations and those who have received high scores for psychoticism also tended to be more homophobic.
The researchers also noticed that people who have shown signs of depression were having less chances of being homophobic. The researchers said that it has been said a number of times that there is a link between homosexuality and mental illness. Now, a new study has found that there is a significant link between homophobia and psychoticism.
Study researchers explained psychoticism as a personality trait whose features include aggressiveness and interpersonal hostility. On the other hand, Homophobia is a social problem involving specific personality features with a negative attitude towards homosexuals.
The link of the two can lead to two possible victims including potential sexual offenders and homosexual subjects.
