Somdev to clash with Gil in the first round of US Open
India’s no 1 Somdev Devvarman will lock horns with 110th ranked Frederico Gil of Portugal in the first round of the men’s singles event of the US Open. Somdev had defeated Poland's Jerzy Janowicz in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 in the qualification round to qualify for main draw of his first ever Grand Slam event.
Somdev has impressed with his performance in the international circuit in this year. Somdev had made into the finals of the ATP Chennai Open in January and he also reached into the third round of the Legg Mason Classic. Somdev will be looking to continue his dream run when he will go out on the court No.15 to play against Gil.
Gil has already played in the Grand Slam events as he made into main draws of French Open, Wimbledon and US open last year. But, he failed to advance into the second round every time in the Grand Slam events.
Somdev and Gil have not met each other in the past and if Somdev wins his first round match then he might play against World No. 23 Germany's Philipp Kohlschreiber in the second round. Philipp will meet Andreas Seppi of Italy in the first round. Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza is another Indian to feature in the US Open. Sania will play against Olga Govortsova of Belarus in the first round of women’s singles event.
