Skipping use of personal care products can reduce level of Chemicals in Body

You may not believe if you are told that amount of chemicals in cosmetics you use have potential to increase level of chemicals in your body. However, a new study could persuade you to believe that skipping your daily used cosmetics can bring down the level of certain chemicals in your body.

The study, which showed levels of endocrine-disrupting chemicals falling in young women on avoiding use of conventional cosmetics for a specific time, was published in Environmental Health Perspectives.

Daily use of personal care products, such as makeup, perfume, hair products and sunscreen and many other contain chemicals, some of which are phthalates, parabens, triclosan and oxybenzone, can be problematic. These chemicals are believed to disrupt body’s endocrince system which causes hormone imbalances, neurobehavorial problems, obesity, diabetes and even cancer in extreme cases.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University of California, Berkeley to find out duration for these chemical to persist in body. With the help of local health clinic, the researchers asked a group of 100 girls to stop using their personal care products for three days.

The researchers found that the level of endocrine-disrupting chemicals decreased by avoiding cosmetic products that girls used prior to experiment. According to the urine samples taken before and after the trial, there was 45% and 44% fall in the level of propyl parabens and methyl parabens, respectively. There was 36% decrease in level of benzophenone-3, a chemical found in sunscreen and 27% drop in the level of diethyl phthalate, found in perfume.

"One of the goals of our study was to create awareness among the participants of the chemicals found in everyday products, to help make people more conscious about what they're using,” said Maritza Cárdenas, one of the study’s teen researchers who is now an undergraduate student at UC Berkeley.
