Singapore prepares climate change impact report

Singapore prepares climate change impact reportSingapore  - Environment experts are expected to release a climate change report on Singapore this year, highlighting the impact on coastal erosion, water scarcity and higher energy demand, according to a news report Thursday.

Even though there are no melting icebergs or severe droughts threatening the city state, in Singapore, the tropical island could still be vulnerable to climate changes such as coastal erosion, water scarcity, and higher energy demand, the Channel News Asia cited experts as saying.

The Singapore government has implemented a number of initiatives to promote sustainable development for supporting the city state's future economic and population growth while maintaining a clean and green environment, the report said.

The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Sustainable Development was scheduled to launch a blueprint early this year, providing a comprehensive roadmap of initiatives to sustain Singapore's development for the next 10 years and beyond.

Singapore, with a population of more than 4 million, has no natural resources and has managed to cut its water imports from Malaysia by developing rain water reservoirs, desalination plants, and recycling water systems. The island state imports all of its energy needs in the form of oil and natural gas. (dpa)
