Singapore premier warns torch protests will have consequences
Singapore - Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong warned Friday that outrage among China's young over the Olympic torch relay protests would have consequences well beyond the Beijing Games.
Chinese anger could be read on the flooded internet bulletin boards carrying anti-foreign sentiments, Lee said at a conference organized by the London School of Economics.
The relay, which was China's "coming-out party," has also become the golden opportunity for China's critics to make their points, he said.
While demonstrators have criticized China over its treatment of Tibetans and its human-rights record, the people of China believe the protesters want to inflict maximum humiliation on China and the Chinese people more than the Chinese government, Lee said.
If Westerners could read what is being said on Chinese internet postings, "young Americans and Europeans would realize that these displays of contempt for China and things Chinese will have consequences in their lifetime, well beyond the Olympic Games," Lee said.
Beijing had intended the 130-day relay to be a "Journey of Harmony," but thousands of protesters have disrupted the relay as it traveled through such major cities as London and Paris.
Lee said that instant information through satellite television and the internet might have great economic benefits but it has also caused people to respond to unfiltered, raw information or misinformation without the benefit of informed interpretation. (dpa)
