Singapore Night Safari cancels performances after drug arrests
Singapore - The Singapore Night Safari, one of the city-state's major tourist attractions, cancelled performances Wednesday after dancers of a contracted group from Malaysia had been arrested on suspicion of drug offences.
"Due to unforeseen circumstances, all cultural performances at Night Safari have been suspended until further notice," a statement on the safari's website said. "... Do enjoy the other attractions Night Safari has to offer."
Wildlife Reserves Singapore, which operates the Night Safari, said three dancers were detained Sunday and accused of possessing methamphetamines after a routine check at the border crossing between Malaysia and Singapore.
On Monday, seven more male members of the group were detained after officers of Singapore's Central Narcotics Bureau visited their premises.
However, after two days of investigation, nine of the 10 contract workers were released, Wildlife Reserves Singapore said.
The dancers were contracted to entertain tourists as "the Thumbuakar Tribe" with performances of tribal dances, blowpipe demonstrations and fire-eating displays.
Wildlife Reserves Singapore called the incident "a complete breach of trust." (dpa)
