SIA takes delivery of fifth A380

Singapore  - The delivery of the fifth superjumbo to Singapore Airlines (SIA) has paved the way for additional services to London and special flights to Beijing during the Olympics, the carrier said Saturday in Singapore.

The A380, the world's largest passenger aircraft, was turned over to SIA on Saturday at the Airbus delivery centre in Toulouse, France and scheduled to arrive in the city-state on Sunday.

SIA is upgrading more of its B747-400s to A380s on the Singapore to London route and back. In addition to the A380 daily service, another superjumbo flight to Heathrow will start next month on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, the SIA statement said.

Beginning August 2, "the aircraft will be deployed to Beijing to cater to the increased demand in the lead-up to the start of the Olympic Games," SIA said. "These will be the first A380 flights" to (mainland) China.

SIA is the first and only carrier flying the A380. It has firm orders for 14 more aircraft and options for six. The carrier also flies the A380 to Sydney and Tokyo. (dpa)
