“Sholay” Producer G P Sippy Passes Away

Mumbai: Famous Hindi film producer G P Sippy died on Tuesday night after prolonged illness. The 93-year-old, G P Sippy had produced the biggest blockbusters of the era including “Sholay”, “Seeta Aur Geeta”, “Shaan” and “Sagar.”

Belonging to a rich Sindhi family, Sippy started his career with the film “Marine Drive” in 1955. In the same year, he produced “Adl-e-e-Jahangir” with star-cast of Meena Kumari, Pardeep Kumar and Durga Khote.

In 50s and 60s, Sippy produced renowned flicks like “Shrimati 420,” “Chandrakant”, “Light House, and “Bhai Behan” and “Andaaz.” Besides producing, Sippy also directed all these films.

“Sholay,” a landmark in Hindi cinema, was produced by Sippy in 1975.

Sippy acted as chairman of the Film and TV Producers Guild of India on the four occasions. He was honored with Filmfare awards in 1968 and 1982.

Many may not know that GP Sippy actually begun his career with carpet selling and construction work.

In 90s, he produced films like Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Aatish, and Zamaana Deewana.

Now Ramesh Sippy, son of GP Sippy is producing films. Both the father and son worked as producer – director and created many good films.
