New Delhi, Mar 4 : Ex-BCCI chief Sharad Pawar on Wednesday supported the Home Ministry''s proposal to reschedule the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament, in view of security concerns following the Tuesday''s attack on Sri Lankan cricketers in Lahore.

Talking to the reporters here today, Pawar said , "The security for the Indian Premier League is not a cause for worry but the government''s view on the matter should be taken into account by the organisers of the Twenty20 event."

Home minister P Chidambaram had on Tuesday said the IPL should consider postponing the second edition of its T20 cricket tournament as it clashes with the general election dates.

According to Chidambaram, holding the 45-day tournament could be a high security risk due to non-availability of para-military forces, as they have to be deployed for poll duties.

IPL chairman and commissioner Lalit Modi has said that he would leave no stone unturned to provide security to the players.

"The IPL is fully cognizant of the importance of general elections in a country such as ours. We will go a step further to ensure that there will be no games 24 to 48 hours prior to the polling dates across all the nine match venues in the country." Modi said.

More than 21 lakh security personnel will be pressed into service during the upcoming General Elections.

The second edition of 20-over cricket matches will take place in Jaipur, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Delhi and two other venues, which are yet to be decided. (ANI)
