Second Yosemite tourist diagnosed with plague: Reports
According to California officials, a second tourist who visited Yosemite National Park of California is diagnosed with plague. According to them, the patient who visited from Georgia, was tested following hearing that some parts of the park were closed for spraying pesticides in order to kill fleas that carry the infection.
Last week, one famous campground was shut down, and another is shut down this week in order to spray for fleas following a Los Angeles girl was detected with plague after visiting there and it was found that two dead squirrels were also infected.
According to state Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith, “Warnings issued in California regarding plague were useful all the way across the country in Georgia. Those warnings helped the patient get the prompt medical attention necessary to recover from this illness".
Plague could appear similar to the flu and it could change into a fatal illness in case not treated on time with antibiotics. Symptoms of the disease include headache, fever, nausea and chills.California's health department said in a statement that the patient was spending holidays in Yosemite National Park (Yosemite), which is the Sierra National Forest and nearby areas in California in August before falling ill.
As per the department, over the past two weeks, the plague has been detected in wild rodents at Crane Flat and Tuolumne Meadows campgrounds in Yosemite; however, the threat to human health is low. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the disease is very rare in America.
