Sandra Lee Reveals She Is Battling With Breast Cancer

Sandra Lee, America’s famous television chef and author revealed on Tuesday that she is battling with breast cancer.

The Food Network television star said she will very soon undergo a double mastectomy procedure.

The popular lifestyle personality and live-in girlfriend of New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo disclosed the news on ABC's ‘Good Morning America’.

The 48-year-old Lee said her doctor called her late last month soon after she completed a photo shot for People magazine, telling her she had cancer.

She further said she has got a cancerous lump removed and will have more extensive surgery later in this week.

The star revealed to the world that her cancer was found after a routine mammogram. And she decided to talk about her illness to encourage other women to get screened for breast cancer.

Lee during the interview said, “If it saves one person, and makes one more person go get a mammogram, and if they're sitting down right now watching this, don't watch this TV”.

Lee during the interview encouraged women for getting a mammogram, procedure used to check breast cancer in women who previously have no signs or symptoms of the disease.

It has been found that a government-appointed task force does not advices to go for mammograms until the age of 50, but it says that if opting in 40s it is completely a personal choice.

The American Cancer Society on the other has long recommended starting screening for breast cancer at the age of 40.

Doctors told Lee that she has been diagnosed with DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ), a common noninvasive cancer contained within the milk ducts that can become invasive over time if left untreated.

Lee has chosen to undergo a double mastectomy because she did not want to be subjected to six to eight weeks of daily radiation.
