Sandra Lee, Governor Cuomo’s girlfriend, recovering from breast-cancer surgery

According to Governor Cuomo, Sandra Lee is feeling better after undergoing breast-cancer surgery on Tuesday. Cuomo said in a statement that Sandy underwent surgery around 8 am this morning; the surgery concluded just before 1 pm.

According to the Governor, “I am happy to report that she is doing as well as can be expected and has begun the post-surgery recovery process. On behalf of Sandy and myself, I want to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers over the last few days”.

According to reports, before 1 pm, Lee’s double mastectomy was completed and she was in the recovery room for about two additional hours. Lee was showered with many good wishes and her room was full of lilacs, orchids and other flowers’ fragrance after she received several bouquets; she also received baked goods. According to sources, it is expected that for the rest of the week she will stay in hospital as she starts the process of breast reconstruction.

A week ago on ‘Good Morning America’, Lee went public with her breast cancer diagnosis. She said on the show that she was shocked when she was told regarding the matter; she was so stunned that she didn’t even cry.

Lee said she consulted some physicians regarding whether she should get one breast or both removed as a lumpectomy didn't yield clean margins. She said doctors recommended her to get them both done.

Lee was found to be affected by DCIS, or ductal carcinoma in situ. According to the Mayo Clinic, it is the most common non-invasive kind of breast cancer. It is not life-threatening, but needs to be treated.
