Sainsbury's like-for-like sales rise 0.8%
Sainsbury's, leading supermarket chain in the UK, has recorded an increase in sales backed by its focus on becoming convenience store and online sales.
Sainsbury's has been able to attract customers with its 'Live Well for Less' offers for the customers looking to save at difficult economic times. The chain recorded a growth in the convenience store and online business sales growth in the 34th quarter.
The supermarket chain said that it has continued to record a growth in market share after its like-for-like sales rose 0.8 per cent during the 12 weeks to June 8 excluding petrol. The growth rate is slower than the 3.6 per cent growth recorded in the fourth quarter of the previous financial year. The company said that it is comparison is tough as it was marking its Jubilee celebrations at that time.
Chief executive Justin King said, "This has been a solid performance in what continues to be a tough consumer environment."
The chain said that its convenience store sales rose 209 per cent from the same period in the previous year. The results were announced just a week after Tesco said that its sales fell of 1 per cent during the first quarter.
