Sabarmati jail clash leaves one dead

One prisoner was killed and two others seriously injured when three prisoners clashed with each other at Sabarmati central jail on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Suresh Kakadia, a resident of Bhavnagar. The two prisoners who were injured have been identified as Shankar Thakore and Davendra Rajput. Both have been admitted to Civil Hospital for treatment.

The Sabarmati police said that clashes among prisoners broke out in the jail at around 1 pm after Mahendra Vala and Aadam had an altercation with Suresh Kakadia over something. Vala and Kakadia were at loggerheads over a financial matter.

Sources said that a few years back, Aadam had brought, for Rs 25,000, a pistol for Vala from Madhya Pradesh but he could not give him the pistol because he [Vala] was in jail. Vala asked Aadam to give the pistol to his friend, Suresh Kakadia, who was Vala’s accomplice in many incidents of loot and theft. In due course, Suresh Kakadia and Aadam were also arrested by the police and came to be lodged in Sabarmati jail.

Ever since Kakadia and Aadam arrived in Sabarmati jail, Vala had been asking Kakadia to pay him Rs25,000, on the plea that he [Kakadia] had earned a lot of money from the pistol that Aadam had given him a few years back.

On Sunday, the three again had an altercation over the issue. Angered by the heated exchange, Vala hit Kakadia on the neck with a three-inch steel plate that he had made from several tiffin boxes.

Hearing the commotion, two other prisoners, Shankar Thakore and Davendra Rajput, ran to Kakadia’s rescue but Vala assaulted them too.
