Russian man gets 14 years prison for murdering German Jesuit priest Moscow - A Russian man found guilty of killing a German Jesuit priest in October 2008 has received a 14-year prison sentence, reported the Interfax news agency Tuesday, citing court sources.

The man, whose identity was not revealed, was found guilty last week by a jury of bludgeoning to death a Jesuit priest, Victor Betancourt, 42, with a dumbbell. The convicted man had said he lashed out at the priest after Betancourt made unwanted sexual advances.

Prosecutors also charged the man with the murder the next day of a second Jesuit priest, Otto Messmer, allegedly to cover up the first murder. However, a jury acquitted the man of that crime.

Prosecutors had sought a 15-year sentence. The man, who has previously been charged with rape and robbery in unrelated cases, will be in prison under tight security, said court officials. According to Russian media, the man has confessed to the murder.

The two Jesuits were members of a Germany-based charity group called Renovabis involved in aid projects in Eastern Europe. (dpa)
