Royal Canadian Mounted Police announces restrictions on use of stun guns
According to official reports, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on Tuesday announced new restrictions on the use of stun guns following the death of a Polish immigrant.
Stun guns should be fired only when "a subject is causing bodily harm, or the police believe … the subject will imminently cause bodily harm," the RCMP said in a news release.
The order follows the October 2007 death of Robert Dziekanski, who was stunned repeatedly in a confrontation with police after he started throwing furniture around Vancouver International Airport.
The new policy also requires police to issue a verbal warning before a stun gun is fired, Canwest news service has reported. (With Inputs from Agencies)
