Vintage water mills are a charm for residents of Kumaon in Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand Kaladungi (Kumon) Uttarakhand, Sep. 23 : A majority of residents in the rural Kumaon region of Uttarakhand continue to use the vintage water-powered mills for grinding purposes.

In the remote population in Kaladungi and other areas in Kumaon region people don’t want to give up the water powered mills.

The British, in the late 19th century, are known to have originally introduced water-powered mill here. Since then residents have found it easy for everyone to get the wheat grinded into flour.

Wipro Infotech Opens Manufacturing Unit In UttarakhandWipro Infotech, the peripherals manufacturing subsidiary of Wipro, has opened its second manufacturing unit at Kotdwar in Uttarakhand.

Covering 5.8 acres of land at the foothills of the Himalayas, the proposed unit will produce servers, storage, notebooks, desktops and allied IT electronics products.

According to the source, the plant is equipped with a manufacturing capacity of approximately 1000 machines a day.

The company however did not divulge the investment in this project.

Heavy rainfall badly disrupts life in Dehradun

DehradunDehradun (Uttarakhand), July 25 : A record rainfall in Dehradun city of Uttarakhand has brought everything here to a standstill. Local residents observe it as a quite unusual occurrence for July in this part of the State.

Dehradun has witnessed 596-millimetre rainfall this month, which is a record here for July.

The monsoon arrived much earlier this year as compared to the previous years. The normal rainfall in June used to be 225 millimeters but it was 598 millimeters this year.

Heavy rains have caused massive damage to public property. Dehradun has been badly affected with low-lying areas either submerged or clogged by water.

Sixteen killed in bus accident in northern India

AlmoraAlmoraNew Delhi  - At least 16 people were killed and 29 injured when the bus they were travelling in left the road and plunged into a river in India's northern mountainous state of Uttarakhand on Wednesday, a news report said.

The bus was carrying 45 passengers at the time of the accident in the Uttarakashi district some 120 kilometres north-east of state capital Dehradun, police official Hukam Singh Khati told the PTI news agency.

The bus driver lost control of the vehicle when one of its front tyres burst, Khati said.

The victims included seven Hindu pilgrims who were visiting shrines in the region.
