Conflict remains endemic in most of Africa, UN says New York - The UN Security Council discussed Wednesday ways to improve cooperation with the African Union after a study showed that peace still does not exist in many parts of Africa despite the deployment of largescale UN peacekeeping operations.

"From the Horn to the Great Lakes to West Africa, conflict is endemic," said the study by a six-member panel headed by former Italian Prime Minister and European Union statesman Romano Prodi.

United NationsNew York  - An ambush in Sudan's Darfur that led to the death of one peacekeeper was condemned Tuesday by the United Nations- African Union mission in the strife-torn western Sudanese region.

"The UN-AU mission in Darfur strongly condemns these cowardly acts of violence against its peacekeepers and calls on all parties including the government of Sudan to ensure the safety of UN personnel in the region," United Nations spokeswoman Marie Okabe said from UN headquarters in New York.

Kidnapped UN workers released in Somalia Nairobi/Mogadishu/New York  - Gunmen late Monday in Somalia released four United Nations relief workers - three foreigners and one local staffer - after a brief abduction, the UN said.

Marie Okabe, a spokeswoman at UN headquarters in New York, said that the four were released following a brief detention by the armed kidnappers. No details were provided.

The investigation by the UN board of inquiry was ordered by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon after the UN suffered extensive damage to its offices and schools for Palestinian children in Gaza as a result of Israeli airstrikes.

All foreign aid groups should leave Sudan within a year Nairobi/Khartoum - Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir Monday said that he wanted all international aid organizations to cease operations in Sudan within a year as the fall-out from his indictment by the International Criminal Court (ICC) continued.

Sudan earlier this month expelled 13 organizations, including Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam, after the ICC issued an arrest warrant on al-Bashir for alleged war crimes.

Most of the agencies were banished from the conflict-hit Darfur province.
