Anti-government demonstration enters 100th day in Bangkok

BangkokSamak Sundaravej - A protest calling for the resignation of Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and dissolution of his government entered its 100th day Monday, with thousands on demonstrators in command of Government House - the administrative seat.

The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD), a loose coalition of conservative groups opposed to the current government, has been staging peaceful anti-government demonstrations on Rajdamnoen Avenue in the old section of Bangkok since May 25.

Thailand's inflation down 3 per cent in August Bangkok - Thailand's inflation fell by 3 per cent in August, compared with the previous month, as the government's populist policies on reduced utility bills went into effect and world oil prices fell, commerce officials said Monday.

Year-on-year inflation in August was at 6.4. per cent, but it was down 3 per cent compared with July, when the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 9.2 per cent year-on-year.

The CPI for the first eight months was 6.7 per cent, said Commerce Ministry Permanent Secretary Siripol Yotmuangcharoen.

Asia-Pacific tops in various telecommunications sectors

Bangkok - The Asia-Pacific region is the world's largest broadband market with 39 per cent of the total, the largest mobile phone market with 1.4 billion subscribers and claims 42 per cent of the world's internet users, a UN report revealed Monday.

By mid-2008, China and India alone had over 600 and 280 million mobile phone subscribers respectively, representing nearly a quarter of the world's total, said a report on telecommunications and information communication technology indicators by the International Telecommunication Union released in Bangkok.

The Asia-Pacific region, covering a vast and disparate area from West Asia to the Pacific Islands, notched up several "superlatives" in this year's report.

Carriers restart Singapore-Phuket route after airport reopens

Singapore - Airlines were resuming their service between Singapore and the popular Thai holiday island of Phuket after the facility reopened following its closure by anti-government demonstrators, a newspaper report said.

Tiger Air and Air Asia planned to resume their service Monday, The Straits Times reported.

SilkAir became the first to reopen the route, resuming its flights Sunday night and upping its regularly scheduled single evening flight between Singapore and Phuket to three to ferry its backlog of passengers between the two destinations. It said it would operate its normal schedule of five flights Monday.

Thai prime minister holds tough in face of protest crisis

"I came to power in accordance with the law," said Samak, addressing his weekly "Talking Samak Style" television program. "I have done nothing wrong."
