Kadima, Likud close, but sharp pull to the right before election

Israeli FlagTel Aviv - The centrist Kadima party has narrowed its gap with the hardline Likud of former premier Benjamin Netanyahu, but Netanyahu still leads amid a clear pull to the right in Israeli politics, according to opinion polls published in Israel's leading newspapers, just days before Tuesday's elections.

The Likud has had a lead of some 5 mandates against Kadima of Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni over the past weeks, but according to the polls published Friday, Livni has narrowed her gap behind Netanyahu to around two or three mandates.

Israel gives go-ahead for Gaza money transfer Tel Aviv - For the first time since its recent military action against Gaza, Israel has given the go-ahead for a cash delivery into the Gaza Strip, Israeli media reports said Thursday.

They said 175 million shekels (33 million euros) would be transferred from the West Bank to banks in the Gaza Strip in order to pay around 70,000 employees of the Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas.

The reports said Israeli acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had authorised the delivery against the opposition of Foreign Minister Zipi Livni and Defence Minister Ehud Barak.

Israel admits its tank killed three daughters of Gaza doctor Tel Aviv - Israel admitted Wednesday that it had indeed been an Israeli tank which fired at the eastern Gaza City home of a Palestinian doctor last month, killing three of his daughters.

The girls' deaths were among the most publicized during Israel's 22-day Gaza offensive, as the family's tragedy had unravelled live on Israeli television.

Doctor Ezz al-Din Abu al-Aish, a gynaecologist from northern Gaza, works at the Tel Hashomer hospital east of Tel Aviv and speaks fluent Hebrew.

Palestinian militants fire rocket at Israeli city of Ashkelon Tel Aviv  - Palestinian militants fired a Russian-type Grad rocket Tuesday morning at the southern Israeli coastal city of Ashkelon.

The rocket landed in a residential neighbourhood in the city centre, "just a number of metres from heavy traffic," Mayor Beni Wakni said.

"Only Hamas has Grad rockets as far as I know, so this is Hamas," he told Israel Radio.

Olmert offered Abbas East Jerusalem, to evacuate 60,000 settlers Tel Aviv  - Outgoing Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert offered Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to transfer the Arab neighbourhoods of East Jerusalem to Palestinian sovereignty and evacuate some 60,000 Jewish settlers from the West Bank, an Israeli newspaper reported Thursday.

Yediot Ahronot said Olmert detailed the concessions he offered to Abbas to US President Barack Obama's newly appointed envoy to the Middle East, George Mitchell.

Likud still leading in polls, two weeks before Israeli elections Tel Aviv  - The hardline Likud party of former prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu is maintaining its lead against Israel's ruling, centrist Kadima movement, two weeks before elections are due in the country on February 10, an opinion poll published Wednesday said.

According to the poll published on Israel's Channel 10 television, the Likud is likely to become the largest party in the 120-seat Knesset and obtain some 28 mandates, against 25 for Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni's Kadima.
