French shares up amidst rumours of bank problems

Paris  - Buoyed by Wall Street's strong rebound, French shares on Wednesday continued to make up losses from earlier in the week as rumours swirled that a large French bank was in trouble.

The Paris Bourse's blue-chip CAC 40 was up 0.58 per cent, at 4,055.47, in mid-morning trade, with advancing issues outpacing losers by about three to one.

The French-Belgian bank Dexia, which is to receive an injection of 6.4 billion euros (9.05 billion dollars) from the French, Belgian and Luxembourg governments, led the gainers, up 6.3 per cent to 7.99 euros.

Other financial stocks were faring less well, with insurance giant Axa and the banks BNP Paribas and Societe Generale all on the losing side of the ledger.

The announcement was made after an emergency meeting between Sarkozy and the heads of French banks and insurance companies at the Elysee Palace in Paris, and after the French government joined Belgium and Luxembourg in bailing out the French-Belgian financial services group Dexia.

Manmohan says Indo-French nuke agreement adds new dimension to ties

Manmohan Singh, Nicolas SarkozyParis, Sep 30 : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday said the civil nuclear cooperation agreement between India and France added a new dimension to their strategic partnership.

"Today we have added a new dimension to our strategic partnership by signing an inter-governmental agreement on civil nuclear cooperation," Singh said in a statement after his talks with French President Nicholas Sarkozy during which the landmark nuclear agreement was inked.

India, France ink social security pact

France, IndiaParis, Sept. 30 : The social security agreement inked between India and France will benefit Indian nationals working in France and French nationals working in India.

Under the agreement, workers on short term contracts of upto five years, do not have to make any social security contribution in the country of employment provided they continue to make social security payments in India and France.

India can be affected by global financial crisis, developed nations must take responsibility: PM

Manmohan SinghParis, Sept. 30 : Visiting Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, today said that developed countries primarily needed to take responsibility for resolving the global financial crisis, but added that India and China, as the world''''s two largest emerging economies, must take part in the solution.

Stating this during an interview with the prominent French daily Le Figaro, Dr. Singh warned that the crisis could spread to developing countries like India, as "we live in an interdependent world and the fate of all countries is related to the international financial system."

France and India sign agreement on nuclear energy cooperation

Paris  - France and India have signed an agreement on bilateral cooperation in the development of nuclear energy, according to a joint statement released after a meeting in Paris Tuesday between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The agreement "constitutes the basis of an increased bilateral cooperation in the domain of energy and research," the statement said.

Although no details were provided, French media reported last week that such an agreement could eventually lead to contracts worth some 20 billion euros (28 billion dollars) to French firms for the construction of nuclear power stations in India.
