Tribals protest ''police excesses'' in West Bengal

West BengalMidnapur (West Bengal), Nov 14 : Tribals in Jhargram-Lalgarh belt of West Midnapore district of West Bengal staged a protest against the alleged ''police excesses'' in the area on Friday.

The residents of Jhargram-Lalgarh belt are incensed as they allege that policemen investigating the November 2 landmine attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee have been torturing women and making "indiscriminate" arrests.

The tribals cut off almost four blocks in the district from the rest of the state by digging up roads and felling trees across them.

Flood-hit West Bengal brings in rescue and relief package

Midnapore/Kolkata, June 21: Authorities in flood-hit West Bengal announced relief package for the victims.

With rivers flowing above the danger level and leaving hundreds of thousands of people marooned, situation in Midnapore district continues to be grim.

The State Government is using Air Force helicopters to drop food packets in the affected areas, besides deploying the army for rescue work.

Situation remains critical in flood-hit Midnapore

Midnapore (West Bengal), June 20 : Flood situation in West Bengal's Midnapore District continued to be critical with rivers flowing above the danger level. So far, 23 people have lost their lives.

According to news reports, over two million people have been marooned during the current spell of floods.

Authorities said rescue operations are being speeded up.

At least 39 speedboats have been deployed in several areas.

The State Government has sought use of air force helicopters to drop food packets in the affected areas, besides deploying the army for rescue work.
