Chidambaram reviews law and order situation in ManipurImphal, Feb 3 : Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on Tuesday morning reviewed the overall law and order situation in Manipur.

Chidambaram was accompanied by State Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and security officials.

He held a security review meeting at the State secretariat with Ibobi Singh and other senior officials in view of the intensified counter insurgency operation in the state.

Surrendered militants resort to hunger strike in Manipur

Imphal (Manipur)Imphal (Manipur), Jan. 8 : Surrendered militants staged a hunger strike here on Wednesday over demands for proper rehabilitation and jobs.

Around 37 activists belonging to groups like the People''s Liberation Army (PLA) and the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) participated in the hunger strike.

The former insurgents claimed that they had been evicted by the police and civic officials from a relief camp that was once occupied by the Second Commando Battalion of the Manipur Police.

The authorities, however, contend that the site was earmarked as staff quarters for the police personnel.

Four militants killed in Manipur encounters

Manipur, ImphalImphal (Manipur), Jan. 3 : In separate encounters, the security personnel have gunned down four militants in eastern Imphal and Bishenpur Districts of Manipur.

Reports reaching here from Imphal said that a joint team of police commandos and Assam Rifles raided Sanjenbam village in Imphal East District on Saturday morning after getting some leads on militant movement in the area.

Recently, villagers of Kwakta in Manipur's Bishenpur District successfully prevented an attempt to kidnap a villager by militants. In the clash between villagers and the militants two persons were killed and four were injured including two militants.

Manipur theatre artists enthrall Delhi

Manipur, ImphalNew Delhi, Dec. 30 : Various theatre lovers in Delhi had a special treat from north-east India, recently as they attended a Manipuri play here.

The play "When we dead awaken" was staged by Ratan Thiyam, the noted Manipuri playwright and theatre director during the Delhi Ibsen Festival organized by Royal Norwegian Embassy in collaboration with Dramatic Art and Design academy.

In 1899, Henrik Ibsen wrote a play "When we dead awaken", which is about the celebrated sculptor Arnold Rubek and his wife Maia. The play reflected an intense desire for life.
