Malaysians cast their votes in triple by-election Kuala Lumpur  - Voters in three constituencies in Malaysia went to the polls Tuesday in a by-election indicative of the level of support for newly appointed Prime Minister Najib Razak.

The special parliamentary elections are being held simultaneously for the Bukit Gantang seat in the northern state of Perak, in Bukit Selambau in neighbouring Kedah state and in the Batang Ai constituency in the eastern state of Sarawak on Borneo island.

Results were due to be announced later Tuesday.

Malaysia releases 13 people detained under security law

MalaysiaKuala Lumpur - The Malaysian government on Sunday released 13 people who had been held under a draconian security law, some for suspected involvement in terror networks and others for allegedly posing a threat to national security.

The 13 men had been held under the Internal Security Act, which was set up more than 50 years ago by Malaysia's former British rulers to fight a communist insurgency.

Of the 13, three foreigners - Myanmar nationals Amir Hussain and San Khaing, and Indian national Sundaraj Vijay - were the first to be released.

Malaysia's former leader Mahathir rejoins ruling party Kuala Lumpur  - Malaysia's former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad rejoined the ruling party Saturday, one year after he quit following a falling out with his successor.

Mahathir's decision to rejoin the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) came a day after Najib Razak was sworn in as new prime minister.

Najib took over from Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who had been Mahathir's chosen successor after he retired in October 2003.

Malaysian Indian Congress calls for release of three other HINDRAF membersKuala Lumpur, Apr. 10 : The Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC) has urged the federal government to release the other three Hindu Rights Action Front (HINDRAF) members, who were detained under Internal Security Act in 2007.

MIC president S. Samy Vellu was quoted by The Star as saying: "We thank the Government and Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for releasing two ISA detainees associated with the banned HINDRAF movement."

Najib becomes Malaysia’s sixth Prime MinisterKuala Lumpur, Apr 3 : Najib Tun Razak has been sworn in as Malaysia's sixth Prime Minister, taking over the reigns from Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who stepped down after leading the country for over five years.

Najib (55) took his oath of office on Friday. Dressed in a black baju Melayu complete with sampin, Najib arrived at the palace, accompanied by his wife, Rosmah Mansor.

A total of 319 guests, including former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, attended the historic event, the Star reported.

Dressed in black traditional Malay clothing Najib took his oath of office, loyalty and confidentiality before King Mizan Zainal Abidin, making him the country's sixth prime minister.
