Rajya Sabha passes the historic Women’s Reservation bill
Finally Rajya Sabha passed the historic Women's reservation bill on Tuesday evening. The bill was passed in Rajya Sabha with 186 votes in favor of the bill and only one vote against it. The Rajya Sabha has the total strength of 233 seats. Rest of the members was absconding from the voting process. Now the bill will be sent to Lok Sabha, the upper chamber of parliament, to pass.
The historic Women's reservation bill would provide 33% reservation for the women in parliament and state legislatures. Though the bill faced opposition from some parties, yet it crossed all the obstacles and made it way easily as the two major political parties in the chamber of Congress and BJP were in support of the bill.
On Tuesday evening, the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Left Front voted for the bill. While Trinamool Congress, the UPA government's second biggest ally, decided to remain absent from the voting process. Also SP, BSP and RJD decided to remain absent from voting.
Before the voting process, there was a debate on the bill in Rajya Sabha. BJP leader Arun Jaitley, CPI-M leader Brinda Karat, BSP leader Satish Mishra and Jayanthi Natarajan of Congress took part in the debate for the bill.
