Zuma wins election but ANC misses two-thirds majority

Jacob ZumaJohannesburg - South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) won the country's election with a decisive majority according to results Saturday - but fell short of the two-thirds majority it had been batting for. Jacob Zuma's ANC took 65.9 per of votes to the 400-seat National Assembly, against 16.6 per cent for the Democratic Alliance (DA) of Cape Town mayor Helen Zille and a little over 7 per cent for the fledgling Congress of the People, preliminary final results showed.

The Independent Electoral Commission was due to confirm the results later Saturday and officially declare the ANC the winner.

Voting begins in Iceland election

VotingReykjavik - Voting began Saturday in the general election in Iceland, one of the country's most ravaged by the global economic meltdown. The current interim government of socialist Prime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir is favourite to retain power, in coalition with their Green party partners.

The previous government resigned in January, after Iceland's

economy imploded under the pressure of the collapse of three of its over-stretched banks, and mass street protests.

Minister: 587 candidates to run in Lebanese general election Lebanon  - Some 587 candidates will be running in Lebanon's upcoming parliamentary election, due to be held on June 7, the country's interior minister said Thursday.

The poll is expected to be hotly contested between the Western- backed ruling coalition of Prime Minister Fouad Seniora, and the Hezbollah-led opposition.

Interior Minister Ziad Baroud said the 587 candidates will be competing for 125 of the 128 seats in the unicameral parliament.

Disarray in polls - 1 million extra ballots printed

Independent Electoral Commission Johannesburg  - South Africa's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) said Wednesday evening that an extra 1 million ballot papers were being printed after they ran out in some places, spawning long delays, during the country's fourth democratic national and provincial elections.

With less than 15 minutes to go before voting stations were due to close, an IEC official admitted they had just ordered more ballots, but said they were being printed as a "contingency measure" and had not yet been distributed.

Ecuador likely to re-elect left-wing President CorreaQuito - Ecuador is expected to re-elect left-wing populist Rafael Correa as president Sunday amid complaints from his seven weakened challengers that public money is being misused to finance the incumbent's campaign.

Correa, 46, looked poised to secure victory in the first round without a runoff. The election is already historic in Ecuador as the first in which an incumbent president has sought re-election.
