Political Group Clashes with Police in Margao Following Polling Controversy
In a whirlwind of fiasco-laden events, hundreds of supporters backing Tourism Minister Francisco "Mickky" Pacheco clashed with police outside the control room at Fatorda Stadium. This happened soon after Nuvem candidate Francisco Mascarenhas, who is backed by Mickky, complained of anomalies in polls to the Zilla Panchayat, which ended on Sunday.
The whole event turned sour when the ballot boxes were being carried to the control room. The returning officer was approached by Mascarenhas, who expressed his doubts, alleging that the ballot box from booth number 8 of Nuvem constituency "had not been properly sealed while being stored inside the gunny bag".
Candidates Mascarenhas and rival Wilfred D'Sa were called by Returning Officer Sanjeev Desai after the allegation was made. The returning officer then opened the sealed gunny bag in the presence of the Candidates. The gunny bag was re-sealed when the complainant was convinced and satisfied that the ballot box had been sealed properly.
Returning Officer Sanjeev Desai, said about the incident, "The election authorities have initiated an inquiry into the episode. The statement of the presiding officer has been recorded. Investigations are on".
"We had called both the candidates to the receiving centre to personally see that the seal on the ballot box was not tampered with", he added.
